The SD-930 cassette recorder was introduced by marantz in 1983 (November 1983). A lot of confusing and contradictory information can be found about this model, and I'm not talking about information found on the internet but, official manufacturer descriptions. Both the German and English product brochure present this model as having 3-heads but in the same time they present the auto-reverse models also as having 3-heads (Mathematically they all do have 3-heads but they have different functions). Then for even more confusion the service manual says that the SD-930 is a "2 Head System" model... No need to worry though, 1001 Hi-Fi comes to the rescue. The SD-930 is a 3-Head model with separate 1xerase, 1xrecording and 1xplayback head but...there is no monitor switch, yet the inscription on the front panel reads "Digital Monitor Cassette Deck SD930". All clear, isn't it? For whatever reason it seems that the 3-head configuration is only used by the Automatic Compu-Bias System and the MAAC system. The MAAC (Marantz Auto Azimuth Control) system is the highlight of this model. This system is utilizing a piezo-ceramic electric element to adjust the play head for optimal playback of any tape recorded on any cassette deck. This piezo-electric system is actually a Philips technology adapted from a their system used by the Video2000 home video system. The inclusion of a dbx noise reduction system (beside Dolby B and C) guarantees high dynamic range recordings from Digital sources like the newly introduced CD. The mechanism used by this model is a standard 2-motor Direct Drive model with single capstan transport. If all this was not enough there were also 2 versions of this model. This time however is a simple aesthetic difference where the international model was silver(gold) while the Japanese market model was black and it also had a black stripe at the bottom of the front making-it look taller.
