Canon S-50, S-70 (1993) | Wide Imaging Stereo

Wide Imaging Stereo

Brand: Canon
Model: S-50, S-70
Year: 1993

With the S-50 Canon (yes, Canon the camera company) introduced a radically different method creating stereo sound images. As you can observe it resulted in a radically different looking stereo speaker. For a start, the enclosure is not the familiar box-shape, but domed. And instead of pointing outwards, it's directed onto a precisely angled "acoustic mirror". This reflects sound out into the room, and in doing so achieves something quite remarkable. A stereo "hot spot" at least six times the size produced by conventional speakers, meaning that you can enjoy balanced stereo sound over a much larger area of your living room. In other words, whether you're sitting on the left end of the sofa, or the right end, it'll still sound as though you're sitting exactly in the middle. The S-50 is a small "bookshelf" model while the bigger floor-stand model, the S-70 is basically a S-50 with added subwoofer. The Wide Imaging Stereo concept was the brainchild of Hiro Negishi who had worked at Canon’s UK research centre. This led to Canon Audio, a UK based company where several British hi-fi industry specialists were involved creating these loudspeakers. Alan Boothroyd (founder of Meridian) through his independent industrial design consultancy was responsible for the final look of these models.

Technical Data S-70:
2-Way Coupled Cavity Wide Image Stereo
