Victor TD -5000SA (1977) | X-cut SA

Victor TD -5000SA (1977)

You can't say you've fully experienced the world of 2-track 38cm/s performance unless you've immersed yourself in it to this extent. The TD-5000SA approaches the 75 dB dynamic range limit as a program source (the limit for disks is 65 dB), and once you're hooked, it's so fascinating that you won't be able to escape. The TD-5000SA master recording deck incorporates the best of technology from every angle, including the first open deck to feature an SA head. It's a high-performance deck that seeks the ultimate in 2-track 38cm/s performance. The newly developed SA (Sendust alloy) head is used for both recording and playback. It is an evolution of the SF head, which was perfected using JVC's proprietary technology and has been supplied for commercial use. By evaporating a high-hardness Sendust alloy onto the tape sliding surface of the Permalloy core, it has achieved a high level of magnetic properties (sound quality and wear resistance) that have been considered extremely difficult to achieve up until now. This is the third head type that maintains the fine, rich sound quality of Permalloy for long periods of time over a wide frequency range. A unique automatic control circuit is provided to keep the back tension constant and improve the stability of tape running. The rotation speed of the supply reel is counted by a photoelectric pulse detection mechanism, and the motor drive current is controlled according to the remaining amount of tape. In addition to a purely electronic IC logic control circuit, a motion sensor circuit that can immediately switch from FF or REW to PLAY is built in. Utilizing the pulse detection section of the automatic back tension control, the circuit operates as soon as the supply reel stops, and this system commands the switch to PLAY without any time lag. The supply side is a one-way damp tension arm, and the take-up side is a double action tension arm. Both have locks, making it easy to load tapes and edit. Other features include highly stable upper and lower double support capstans, a normal/variable switching bias adjust system with built-in reference oscillator, a MIC/LINE summing type OP amp mixer circuit with no level interference, a -30dB~+10dB wide scale high precision VU meter with mirror, and a new No. 10 reel adapter that does not require height correction, making this a heavy equipment worthy of a high performance machine.

Technical data:
Motor: 1 x 2-speed hysteresis synchronous motor for capstan, 2 x 6 pole induction motor for reel
Tape speed: 38cm/sec, 19cm/sec
Frequency response: 20-38,000Hz (SF tape 38cm/sec OVU recording)
Signal to noise ratio: 65dB (JIS), 58dB (from peak level)
Wow and flutter: 0.03% (WRMS) 38cm/sec 0.05% (WRMS)19cm/sec

YAMAHA GT-2000 (1982) | Gigantic & Tremendous

Gigantic & Tremendous

In 1982, the year that saw the debut of the CD, Yamaha's turntable lineup, up to then always following a high technology course, saw a new model that suddenly took analog back to its origin. This was the GT-2000 large heavyweight player, taking the GT part of its name from the first two letters of the words "Gigantic & Tremendous." A turntable embodying the GT (Gigantic & Tremendous) concept of achieving high rigidity and resonance-free play through absolute mass. While its predecessor PX series had features like a state-of-the-art symmetrical linear arm and feather touch full auto mechanism, the new GT-2000 was a simple manual player with a conventional S-shaped long arm, not even having pitch control. With a density and accuracy on a par with solid wood thanks to a hot forging method, the turntable measured 374mm in diameter and weighed 5.8kg including a 300g rubber sheet. With a unique shape featuring a high outer edge it achieved a massive inertia of 1200kg/㎠. A powerful direct-drive motor boasting startup torque of 2kg/cm made possible a positive and negative two-way servo that could instantaneously apply torque in the opposite direction during both acceleration and deceleration, and when used with the external power supply sold separately it was possible to operate the electronic brake by using the main body power switch as in broadcasting equipment. The GT-2000 also made owners swoon with a range of attractive accessories that let them enjoy customizing their units with their own hands. These included the previously mentioned YOP-1 external power supply, the YAB-1 32kg anchor block that held the cabinet from the left and right, the YDS-1 disc stabilizer utilizing a brass platter and electric absorption pump, and the YSA-1/YSA-2 straight tonearm. The GT-2000x introduced in 1985 was a Limited Edition upscale model with upgraded enclosure, tonearm and shaft. (Source Yamaha) Original sale price 2000 DM Germany.

Aurex SB-Lambda70C (1983) | Clean Drive

Aurex SB-Lambda70C (1983) | Clean Drive

Brand: Aurex/TOSHIBA
Model: SB-Lambda70C
Year: 1983

The SB-Lambda70C is using MOS-FET in the output stage and to further improve sound quality it is also using VX capacitors in the power supply section. It is also equipped with Aurex's unique clean drive. In the Clean Drive method, a distortion component detection code is added to the negative terminal side of the speaker. This detects the distortion component generated in the speaker and feeds it back into the amplifier. Then, the feedback amount is adjusted to cancel the distortion component in the amplifier. This eliminates the distortion caused by the transmission characteristics of the speaker cable and the back electromotive force generated in the speaker, and improves the dynamic characteristics.
