PIONEER Pure Malt Series - Limited Edition since 1998

Loudspeaker

Available since 1998, Pure Malt speakers have gained worldwide recognition as leading example of Pioneer's recycling efforts. In the "Resource Recycling Technology & System Awards" presented by the Clean Japan Center and supported by the METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), the Pure Malt speaker series won the "Clean Japan Center Chairman's Award" in 2009. Pure Malt speakers were developed in collaboration with brewing and distilling company Suntory Holdings limited, which was seeking a way to recycle casks (made from virgin white oak) that were being used for fuels and other purposes after fulfilling their mission of aging whisky. Oak trees grow for 100 years before serving as whisky casks for another 50 to 70 years. After that the wood is recycled into speaker cabinets that produce warm, rich sounds for many more years.

The first loudspeaker of the Pure Malt series was the S-PM1000, introduced on September 17, 1998 and it was limited to 1,000 sets. The Pure Malt speakers are more than just eco-speakers made from white oak (one of the world's hardest woods, used for the original Santory barrels) they also feature a newly-designed silk soft dome tweeter and composite cone woofer. A set of matching electronics with Pure Malt design elements and limited to 500 units, were introduced in 1999. These were the A-D5A-PM amplifier (60W + 60W 8Ω, 20Hz-20kHz, 0.05%) and the PD-HL5-PM Hi-bit Legato Link CD player. The Pure Malt series continued in 2000 with the introduction of the S-PM2000 loudspeaker, in 2005 it was introduced the S-A4SPT-PM loudspeaker, in 2006 they were followed by the S-A4SPT-VP (TAD) loudspeaker the S-PM300 loudspeaker and the B-PM1000 rack. The last models were introduced in 2016, these are the S-PM50 and S-PM30 Vertical Twin loudspeakers.

Microcassette in Higher Fidelity - An (almost) Complete List

microcassette

microcassette

The microcassette was introduced by Olympus in 1969. The microcassette is significantly smaller than a Compact Cassette but it uses the same width of magnetic tape. Using thinner tape and a 2.4 cm/s standard speed you can have 30 minutes recording time per side, and double that duration at 1.2 cm/s. Unlike the Compact Cassette the tape spools in the opposite direction, from right to left and it is capstan drive just like Compact cassette.

Microcassettes proved to be popular for recording voice in dictation machines and answering machines. However, Microcassettes have also been used as a medium for recording music on Type IV metal tapes. This article presents some of the higher fidelity Microcassette decks that were manufactured for a short period of time in the early 80's.

It has to be noted however that before microcassettes, PHILIPS intoduced the minicassette that was featured in the movie A Clockwork Orange but everybody mistakes them by the OLYMPUS microcassettes. They are very similar in size but the Philips minicassette system does not use a capstan for tape transport.

PIONEER CarryCom system (1983) - A New Concept in Compact Stereo.

boombox

Pioneer's CarryCom System was a new concept in compact stereo components. It packs like a portable, but unpacks into individual components - speakers systems, versatile stereo FM/AM tuner/amp combo and fully-equipped stereo cassette deck. Together they add up to integrated component system, just like home hi-fi's. When sold as complete system the following combinations were available: CK-3, CK-W3, CK-5, CK-7T and CK-R11. Your options however are not limited to these "ready made" combinations as the CarryCom System is a modular system and the components are designed so you can choose exactly the right combination of units that best matches your needs - and your budget. These are the components that you could choose from:

TUNER-AMP: FA-C3 tuner-amp with analog AM/FM Stereo | FA-C5 tuner-amp with analog AM/FM Stereo, 5-band Graphic Equalizer | FA-C7T tuner-amp with Quartz-PLL Synthesizer preset SW/MW/FM Stereo tuner, 5-band Graphic Equalizer. All models feature the same power output: continuous average power 12.5 W/ch, min. at 6 ohm from 60-20.000Hz with no more than 5% total harmonic distortion and the same size, 225x110x150 mm. There was an additional Power Amplifier as well with continuous power output of 30 watts per channel, min. at 6 ohms from 40 to 20.000Hz with no more than 5% total harmonic distortion. Size: 225x110x192 mm, weight: 5kg.
CASSETTE DECK: CT-C3 stereo cassette deck with Dolby noise reduction and Automatic Level Control | CT-C8 stereo auto-reverse cassette deck with full-logic control, auto tape selector (Metal/Chrome/Normal), music search, Dolby noise reduction | CT-C9W stereo double cassette deck with 2+2 motor transport, double speed tape copy, relay play, full-logic control. The CT-C3 and CT-C8 have the same size 225x110x150 mm, and can be powered by any of the tuner-amplifiers or with 10 D-type batteries. The CT-C9W dimensions are 225x110x200 mm and can be operated from the mains or external DC: 12-15V.
SPEAKER SYSTEMS: CS-C3 2-way bass reflex with 12cm cone woofer and 2.5cm Ceramic Tweeter, 6ohm, 50-20.000Hz, 45W, 168x226x150 mm | CS-C7 2-way rear open type with acoustic dampers, 15x21cm Pioneer exclusive Flat Woofer and 9cm cone tweeter, 6ohm, 40-20.000Hz, 100W, 168x226x150mm | CS-C11 3-way rear open type with acoustic dampers, 15x21cm Pioneer exclusive Flat Woofer, 9cm cone tweeter and Ribbon Supertweeter, 6ohm, 30-50.000Hz, 100W, 168x336x150 mm.
Additional components are the PL-C7 belt-drive turntable, AC-C7 accessory case, AD-C23 carrying handle and mounting set.
The Pioneer exclusive FLAT WOOFER covers the front panel of the speaker enclosure edge to edge. You get much more bass in far less space. All the center is a cone tweeter to handle the mid and high frequencies with maximum clarity. A port on the rear, and special acoustic dampers on one side of each enclosure add dimension and authority to the sound. In the 3-way CS-C11 systems, superhighs are handled by the Ribbon Supertweeter.

PIONEER EXCLUSIVE model 2401 (1983) - Studio Monitor Speaker System

loudspeaker

The Pioneer Exclusive model 2401 was introduced in 1983. This state-of-the-art loudspeaker was available for the mass market branded as Pioneer while for the professional audio sector it was available as TAD TSM-1. Since day one (1975), TAD Labs has been building only the highest quality, technologically leading loudspeaker chassis. Used in countless recording studios worldwide, the name TAD Labs has become an integral part of the professional scene. TAD's philosophy has remained the same to this day: Technological superiority paired with uncompromising authenticity. Introduced in 1983, the state-of-the-art TAD Labs TSM-1 studio monitor quickly gained an excellent reputation. The clear, precise sound, which reflects the energy and passion of live music like hardly any other loudspeaker, gives these TAD Labs models a near monopoly in the eighties. Even by today's standards these legendary transducers are a coveted collector's item.

The TSM-1 (Exclusive model 2401) is a scientifically-designed monitor speaker system combining five TAD speaker components - two TL-1601a low-frequency loudspeakers, one TD-4001 high-frequency driver, one TH-4001 stabilized dispersion horn, and the TN-1 dividing network. It was designed for use in large studio control rooms. It provides both high power at all frequencies and superior transient response - a rare combination. Thanks to the use of two parallel-driven low-frequency loudspeakers, the maximum sound pressure level is a particularly high 126dB/W at 1m. Its dispersion pattern is critically controlled, based on tests of actual studio acoustics: response is smooth over a wide listening area, and consistently clear directivity can be enjoyed. Specifications: Impedance 4 ohm (when built-in network is employed) | Frequency range 29-20.000Hz | Input level 300 watts (rated) 600 watts (maximum) | Sound pressure level 98dB/W (1m) | Maximum sound pressure level 126db/W (1m) | Crossover frequency 650Hz | Dimensions 1100x900x712 mm | Weight 145 kg.

PIONEER M-22 (1978) - Series Twenty Class-A

stereo power amplifier

The culmination of PIONEER's creative design can be heard with the esoteric Series Twenty Class-A components which achieve the exceptional warmth and presence of valve-type amplifiers without the drawbacks of the old designs. The Series Twenty was launched in 1978 to prove just how "high" fidelity could really reach if the cost factor is eliminated. The PIONEER M-22 is operating strictly in the Class-A mode. Admittedly low on efficiency (watts of output per power input) but unbeatably high on performance. The M-22 obtained the highes compliment when the British journal Practical Hi-Fi said the amplifier "can be regarded as the classic straight wire with gain" Technical data: 30 W/ch min. RMS at 8 ohms, from 10 to 30000 Hz Dimensions (WxHxD) 420x153x370 mm, Weight: 22 kg. Partnering components are the U-24 Stereo Programme Source Selector, C-21 Stereo Preamplifier, D-23 Multi-Amp Electronic Crossover Network.

PIONEER CT-A9 (1983) - Reference Master (...for Digital)

cassette deck

The Pioneer CT-A9 was introduced in september 1983 and it's production continued up to 1986 with the "D" version. With this deck Pioneer introduced it's own designed mechanism, the Z Mechanism (quickly renamed as "Reference Master Mechanism"). This is a staggered-resonance closed-loop dual-capstan drive for uniform tape tension and smooth tape running that eliminates dropouts, modulation noise and level variations. The capstan motor is a Qurtz-PLL servo direct-drive DC motor that can achieve an ultra-low wow and flutter of 0.018% (WRMS). The Ribbon Sendust recording and playback heads are mounted on a pressure-diecast zinc support of extremely low tolerance. The mechanism is controlled by a 4-bit micro-computer. For optimum results with any tape the CT-A9 features Pioneer's own auto-tape calibration system, the AUTO-BLE. With a large 35 segment FL display the Pioneer CT-A9 was available in both silver and black versions. The black version usually was presented with vinyl-covered side panels in simulated rosewood grain.
