LUXMAN C-02/M-02 - Status Series (1982)

power amplifier

Over the years, Luxman's strenght in engineering excellence has always been most evident in amplifier design. The M-02 utilize discrete output transistors and maintain high dynamic power even into low impedance loads. Lux's innovative circuitry "Duo-Beta" meant skillful utilization of 2 kinds of NFb. (Optimum Negative Feedback and DC Subsonic Negative Feedback) A slim but effective power transformer with outstanding regulation and far better efficiency than those with the conventional EI core is used for solid bass sound. Unprecedented speedy attack and decay are given in the actual auditory feelings thanks to the unique bias current circuit emplying LED's in lieu of normal diodes. The BTL selector switch provided makes it possible to take out an astounding monaural 320W into 8-ohm loads. Liquid-Cooled heat sink and Peak-Reading power meters with separate channel attenuators complete this very successful model. (LUXMAN M-02: 150 W/ch 8 ohm with no more than 0.015% THD, Frequency Response 10Hz-100kHz, 453*336*141 mm, 14.5kg)

LUXMAN K-05 (1983) - Pure Audio by Lux

cassette deck

The K-05 and K-04 are the cassette decks developed under the ultimate yet essential proposition to realize ultimate fidelity reproduction of original sound. Most of the decks said to sound good accompany a certain colouration, and in many cases such particular atmosphere delivered by colouration is preferred in actual listening. Dissatisfaction at such present status urged LUXMAN to design the top-notch deks K-05 and K-04. Tape travel mechanism is life of tape deck and determines whole sound quality. Good tape transport is a precondition for a good deck. With the K-05 and K-04, the tape trasnport mechanism has been reviewed from the very begining not by means of such temporizing measure to provide ostensible reduction of wow & flutter with Direct Drive motor but by means of newly designed robust "G.T. Transport" - Grand Trust Mechanism, which eventually brought about a dramatic improvement of total tape travel mechanism. Rustic, sturdy chassis made of thick die-cast zinc alloy is moulded and integrated with 2 pairs of capstan bearings, which assures perfect parallelism between the shafts of pinch-roller and capstan as well as their strict verticality to the chassis. 3-DD Motor Configuration, exclusive motor is arranged for each function of capstan drive, reel drive and head-assembly movement.

High quality recording and playback are made possible only by an accurate 3-dimensional control on tape contact. Many manufacturers put great emphasis on the zimuth adjustment (to parallel both the head gaps for recording and playback and to set them perpendicular to tape) With the K-05 and K-04, all of these conditions are fully satisfied on the basis of ultra-precison R/P combination head. In the case of discrete 3-head system, the most critical point is in the azimuth control for the recording and playback heads. On the contrary, the R/P combination head has a big advantage that it can be fixed at the exact position in addition to its close positioning between the recording and playback head-gaps. To make the most of this merit, during the manufacturing process of the head, its azimuth is aligned in the strictest manner by the unit of microns. As commonly known, cassette tape has quality variations even in the same kind supplied under the same brand. To make most of its recording potential, an optimum value has to be selected for each bias current, tape-referenced recording level and equalization. In the case of the K-05 featuring automatic calibration system, the on-deck computer calibrates all of these 3 items individually then correlatively to locate the optimum points, confirming the result of each calibration step in the form of frequency response. Specifications K-05: 3 Head System - Record Sendust, Playback HIP (Hot Isostatic Press) Ferrite, Erase Dual-gap Sendust/Ferrite Junction. Wow & Flutter (JIS WRMS0 no more than 0.022%. Frequency response Metal 15 - 27.000 Hz, CrO2 15 - 22.000 Hz, Normal 15 - 22.000 Hz. Dimensions 460mm(W) x 361mm(D) x 158mm(H) Weight 11.5 kg.

LUXMAN M-05 - Engineering Excellence

LUXMAN M-05

Over the years, Luxman's strength in engineering excellence has always been most evident in amplifier design. The M-05 represented the latest in electronic technology in 1982 from Luxman and it contains the most current circuit designs, including Duo-Beta with single-stage amplification and L.E.D. bias circuitry. The M-05 utilize discrete output transistors and maintain high dynamic power even into low impedance loads.

The top-of-the-line M-05 is a pure class "A" configuration and sonically ranks with the finest amplifiers in the world. A slim but effective power transformer with outstanding regulation is newly designed for this high quality separates, which ensure longlasting, stabilized performance in combination with the select capacitors specially developed for audio use. Especially, the power transformer employed this time offers far better efficiency than those with the conventional EI core, which makes it possible to reproduce soild bass sound.

Unprecedented speedy attack and decay are given in the actual auditory feelings thanks to our unique bias current circuit employing LED's in lieu of normal diodes. In fact, the LED provides very sharp rise and decay in the statics when compared with silicon diode, and therefore ensures stable bias power supply. In addition, it is possible to cope with even an unexpected, sudden fluctuation due to its inherent high-speed response. Furthermore, the inter-terminal voltage per LED is higher than that of diode in general, and to share the same voltage the smaller number of LED's will do in comparison with that of diode. Thus, the esponse speed as well as the decay and rise characteristics show multiple effect, providing conspicuous improvement in the auditory feelings. Unexperienced pure sound is now unveiled.

LUXMAN Laboratory Reference Series - No Mass Product.

LUXMAN Laboratory Reference Series

The LUXMAN Laboratory Reference Series components were introduced in 1976. This lineup consisted of the 5C50 preamplifier, 5M21 power amplifier, 5T50 tuner, 5F70 tone control unit, 5G12 equalizer and 5E24 peak level meter. Later a few more components were made to match these units, like the 5L15 integrated amplifier, 5M20 power amplifier, 5T10 tuner or the 5K50 cassette recorder. For housing these units there was also a rack available, the LK5000. The LRS system has carried the separate concept to "an extreme". The preamplifiers have no tone controls, they are provided by the LRS graphic equalizer or separate tone control unit. The power amplifiers were available with or without meters or supplemented by a separate LED peak indicator. The total harmonic and IM distortion of the LRS power amplifiers at rated power is no more than 0.008 per cent while being capable of delivering 100 watts per channel continous power.

BIGGER = Better ?

These are some of the BIGGEST cassette decks ever made. Were they better than a regular sized deck ? In some cases yes, they were hiding a complex mechanical construction and sophisticated electronics to achieve the best possible sound. Let's take a look at the models and the years they were made.

The AKAI GXC-570D  was first manufactured in 1975 and it features 3 heads and 3 motors.

The eumig FL-1000 was made in Austria in 1979. This is a highly regarded cassette deck.

The OPTONICA by SHARP RT-6906 from 1981 was a 3 head machine with an extra head for a sophisticated track search system.

The PIONEER CT-A1 from 1979 is a 3 head unit with a complex tape calibration system. Briefly sold as Linear Phase 7000 a company that was recently acuired by PIONEER.

A big and beautiful cassette deck from Norway. This is the TANDBERG TCD 3004 from 1980.

A not so well remebered model is the TEAC A-860 from 1976.

A two box solution from Technics. This is the RS-9900US from 1977.

Here is something interesting, something you would not expect. These are two models from 1977 made by UNITRA from Poland. They are the UNITRA M-601SD and the 3 head UNITRA MDS-624.

Finally the BIGGEST of them all but never manufactured. The LUXAN X-3K, only shown as a prototype. With this system the aim was to completely extract the tape from the cassette and run it on a free and precise tape path.
