DENON POA-8000 - State of the Art Power

power amplifier

State of the Art mono power amplifier introduced in 1981 by DENON. I think the POA-8000 can easily compete for the best looking monoblocks ever. It is using a ultra-high stability and ultra low noise construction with DENON's Non-NFB Class-A design. This design will prevent transient distortion and it will provide excellent dynamic characteristic. A high speed, high linearity 3-stage powerful darlington power stage is used while DENON's real bias circuit is enabling high efficency Class A operation. Large VU meters and Digital display adds the final touch to this beautiful power amplifier. The POA-8000 set was partnered by the equally well designed and handsome DENON PRA-6000 preamplifier.

DENON POA-3000RG - MOS Super Optical Class A

POWER AMPLIFIER

The first model of the PRA-2000 / POA-3000 series from DENON was introduced in may 1979. Production has continued for 14 years and the 4th generation, the PRA-2000RG / POA-3000RG, were manufactured until 1993. This power amplifier used a DENON proprietary technology called "MOS Super Optical Class A Circuit" This new inverted-Darlington connection in the driver stage allows a flow of bias current 10 times higher than the previous DENON Optical Class A circuit. Supporting this optical power amplifier is "optical coupling" which transmits the control signal from the bias control circuit to the bias circuit. By using the optical element, the interference between the main signal system and the bias control circuit is completely eliminated, and the bias control is realized at high speed. The amplifier delivers 250 W/ch in Stereo mode while the power increases to 500W when swithed to mono operation. For the power section a large toroidal transformer is used with large power source capacitors. Current is independently supplied to the power stage and the pre-driver stage, all this through a complete dual mono construction.

7 Cassette Decks....Then They Were Vertical

akai
AKAI on the wall - 1974

When we say Cassette deck we normally think of a square box of a component that can be stacked one on each other. This was not however always the case. In the 70's some manufacturers tried a different approach by promoting vertical standing models that can be wall mounted or simply standing next to a tape recorder - like the big boys. Here is a selection of vertical standing cassette decks by various manufacturers.

Summer Holiday and Vintage Portable Audio

Summer Holiday is here so it's time to relax. If you are a rich guy then you simply escape from the Big city.....in a Big way.

If you are like me, a regular Hi-Fi guy, then you pack your bags (and Hi-Fi) and hit the road.

Finally arrived each one goes it's own way. The rich guy with his Yacht, girl and Boombox while the
regular guy is watching the girls and goes to beach parties.

When your holiday ends and you feel a little bit shrinked, that's because you've stayed too much in the water.

That's all folks.

Vertical CD player (part 1 HITACHI)

Various vertical CD players were built during the first 30 Years of CD but in this article we would focus on first generation vertical CD players. These are interesting because both inventors of the CD player, SONY and PHILIPS made their first generation CD player as horizontal playing CD units. SONY opted for tray loading while PHILIPS went with top loading, closely followed by a tray loading model.

The two biggest first generation CD player manufacturers were of course SONY and PHILIPS. While SONY havent supplied it's units to be rebadged by other manufacturers PHILIPS had many rebadged versions. The biggest supplier of these first generation CD players was however HITACHI. Below you can see the HITACHI based models that came from japanese manufacturers:

With an intense activity around the launch of compact disc, french company THOMSON became the main supplier in Europe for these vertical loading CD players from HITACHI. THOMSON owned by this time several french and german brands, so the HITACHI vertical cd player was sold under at least 7 different brand names, including a THOMSON rebadge as well. These are the THOMSON distributed HITACHI vertical cd players:
