AKAI GXC-570D (1978) - Out of This World Sound.

cassette deck

This prestige tape deck was designed for the ultimate in convenience and recording and playback quality. The GXC-570D employs Akai's renown wear-free GX recording and playback heads. The recording and playback heads are mounted in a single head holder. This arrangement provides perfect parallelism of recording and playback head gaps. The GXC-570D also features a unique 3-motor mechanism as well. The capstan motor is a C.P.G. (center pole frequency generated) type AC servo motor used in a closed loop dual capstan drive system while for reel drive the GXC-570D emplys two Direct Drive DC motors. Other features include: 3-way (Normal-Chrome-FeCr) tape selector switch sets the machine to ideal bias and equalization according to the tape being used. Fast forward and rewind speed control. Pitch control for playback. Double process Dolby NR.  A calibration tone switch activates a built-in oscillator to supply a 400 Hz recording signal for recording calibration adjustment. This feature is especially convenient and effective when making a Dolby recording. AKAI's built-in A.D.R.(automatic distortion reduction) System not only automatically adjusts the recording equalization at high frequencies, but also suppresses intermodulation distortion for clear sound over the entire frequency band.

Peak-VU meter indication switch. When set to VU Meter position, the meters indicate normal VU recording and playback levels and when set to Peak Meter position, the meters are set for professional quick response peak level indication to utilize the full dynamic range of the tape without incurring distortion. Independent Mic and Line input jacks and controls facilitate easy sound mixing from separate sources. Akai's exclusive "Sensi-touch" control system allows you to go from one mode to another without ever pushing a button. You just touch them lightly. The GXC-570D features a push-button Door Opener which activates an independent motor to open or close the smoked acryl door which covers the upper front panel controls. Technical data: Wow and Flutter less than 0.06% WRMS (0.17 DIN) | Frequency response 30 Hz to 15,000/16,000/19,000 Hz (=/-3 dB Normal/Chrome/FeCr) | Dimensions 440x255x225 mm | Weight: 13.5 kg. Optional accesory: RC-17 or RC-18 wired full function remote control.

AKAI GX-F91 - Total Advance Deck

cassette deck

No knobs. No keys. And no clutter. AKAI GX-F91, a polite presetation of just the basics. But press the "door" button and, almost by magic, the faceplate automatically lowers (motor powered) to reveal the main control panel. Now,insert a cassette. Two microcumputers take charge, first automatically setting the bias. Then, executing a 64-step "tape-tuning" analysis that makes sure the GX-F91 gets the maximum from any tape. For superior frequency response and dynamic range, the GX-F91 is also endowed with a 3-head design, AKAI Super GX Heads and Dolby B & C systems. Plus operational features like auto-fade, auto-mute and auto-record-cancel that virtually guarantee professional quality recordings. AKAI's original Auto Monitor system is a "Can't Miss" feature that automatically goes into source monitoring during REC standby and into off-the-tape monitoring during REC, to eliminate monitor switch errors. Tape drive has been given added precision with Quartz-lock PLL servo DD motor, adding stability and accuracy so essential to tape travel. The Q&Q (Quick & Quiet) mechanism incorporated into the GX-F91/71/51/31 models provides direct lead-in and power eject for easier operation + ....Many More Akai Features.

AKAI PRO 1000 (1977) - New Height in Open-Reel Decks

reel to reel

The AKAI PRO 1000 from 1977 is a magnificient two-box rarity with impressive technical specifications that unfortunately didn't sell too well. The AKAI PRO 1000 features a 3-Motor/Double-Capstan tape transport system. For the capstan drive, this system uses an AC servo motor with a built-in CPG (Center Pole Generator) to provide smooth, stable operation while two 6-pole eddy current motors are emplyed for the left and right reel drives. Due to the high quality mechanism of this machine, tape speed deviation is +/-0.5% and wow and flutter is 0.025% WRMS at 15 ips. Excellent sound quality can be obtained at either 15 ips, 7-1/1 ips or 3-3/4 ips speed. The AKAI PRO 1000 is a four head, 2-track mastering machine that's as much at home on location as it is in the studio. A 2-track recorder will only record a tape one direction while the tracks are wider for higher quality. For further compatibility the AKAI PRO 1000 features beside the 1/2 track GX record and 1/2 GX playback head a 1/4 track GX playback head for compatibility with tapes recorded on 4 track recorders. Two large meters can be switched between peak level or VU meter but they can also be used as Bias Check display. Setting the meter changeover to Bias Check, the meters will indicate the amount of bias thus making the setting for various tape formulations extremely simple. The standard level (center click-stop) was calibrated to match Scotch #206 tape while the continuous adjustment for bias (+/-40%) brings out the full characteristics of every tape.

AKAI GX-R99 and R-88 - The Super Machines (1985)

cassette deck

AKAI GX-R99 and GX-R88. Two Super Machines that redifine the state of the recording art. Four features mark these decks as significantly new and different (in 1985): (1) Super GX 3-Head Quick Reverse; (2) Closed Loop Double Capstan by Twin Direct Drive; (3) CRLP (Computer Recording Level Processing - GX-R99 only); and (4) High Tuned DC Amplifier Circuitry. Akai's unique Super GX head (Rotary 3-Head design) is made of crystal ferrite in extra hard, mirror polished glass. The superiority of the Super GX head is overwhelming in the critical high frequencies, the playback output level being as much as 7.8dB better than sendust at 10kHz. The finish is so smooth that practically no friction noise is generated and dust particles cannot easily adhere. Both the GX-R99 and GX-R88 are three-head decks with separate Super GX heads using a 4-micron gap for high levl recording and a 1-micron gap for high frequency playback performance.

The double capstan system is driven by one DD motor for forward, and another DD motor for reverse tape transport. Each DD motor has a heavy flywheel to smooth irregularities. Brushless, corelss and slotless FG servo motor construction assures excellent speed accuracy. CRLP (Computer Recording Level Processing - GX-R99 only) handles everything that contributes to the sound quality of a recorded tape. First "Quick Auto Tuning" sets the optimum bias and recording equalization for the tape to be used. Second it detects MOL (maximum output level). Third it analyzes the energy spectrum of the input signal, compares it with MOL and sets recording level to bring out the tape's full potential while avoiding overload distortion. Akai's 3-way 2-color 24-segment fluorescent (FL) display indicates recording level in VU and peak modes, it shows the enrgy spectrum of the music signal, and it includes a 3-way 4-digit electronic tape counter (elapsed time, remaining time, and normal tape counter), auto monitor position, IPLS operation, Dolby NR, MPX filter, reverse mode, and more.

AKAI X-500VT - Audio / Video Tape Recorder (1968)

Audio / Video Tape Recorder (1968)

The AKAI X-500VT is a unique machine that combines a 4-track Stereo Autoreverse Audio reel to reel recorder and a Black and White Video recorder using a 1/4-inch video tape. Under the large head cover there are two sets of heads. In the upper part there is the Video section using a twin rotary video head and audio head for linear audio while the lower part includes a head set in traditional 4-track stereo recorder format in autoreverse and 3 head configuration. Depending how you thread your tape you will have a video recorder (upper head) or a Hi-Fi stereo audio recorder (lower heads). This unique machine was first introduced in 1968 at the 17th Japan Audio Fair. A rebranded version was advertised in the USA in 1970 as the ROBERTS 1000 while in Europe the AKAI X-500VT system was shown in a 1972 AKAI brochure. The AKAI X-500VT was advertised as the right home entertainment system for preserving a family's golden moments. The whole system consisted of the recorder itself a monitor and a camera. The image and its sound are put on 1/4 - inch tape, with the monitor you are able to see the picture you're taping. The tape can be played right away and you can erase it and re-record it. For Video recording a special video tape was available however recently collectors have discovered that you can achieve far superior video performance using a more recent good quality Audio tape.
