Bang & Olufsen Beocord 9000 (1982) - World's Most Advanced Cassette Deck

cassette deck

To hear music reproduced accurately on cassette in your home is one pleasure serious listeners have always been denied until the introduction of the Beocord 9000 in 1982. With the Bang & Olufsen Beocord 9000 you can faithfully reproduce the wide dynamic range of a live performance. So much that it's impossible to pick the difference between the record and recording. The Beodord 9000 incorporates a unique Computer Controlled Calibration system, the Bang & Olufsen HX Professional Recording System and single touch operation. The Beocord 9000 calibrates to any cassette before recording in just nine seconds. Bang & Olufsen have developed a Computer Controlled Calibration system which optimises the performance of any tape. Simply insert any tape and the Beocord 9000 proceeds to set the appropiate bias, sensitivity and equalisation. The specifications for types of tape you use frequently can beplaced in the memory and recalled instantly making future calibration unnecessary. And that's not all, in the calibration process the Beocord 9000 also measures distortion and sets its record level meters according to the characteristics of the particular tape you are using, assuring you of a recording free of audible distortion.

The Beocord is one of the first cassette decks in the world to incorporate HX Professional. Not since the invention of Dolby NR has such a significant inprovement in cassette performance taken place. Even Dolby Laboratories agreed. Overall dynamic range is increased by up to 10dB. Definition of bass frequencies is audibly superior. Frequency response with any tape is +/-1.5dB from 20 to 20000Hz with a S/N ratio up to 80dB with Dolby C NR!. The Beocord 9000 provides an electronically accurate real-time index to all tape locations regardless of type or lenght. To calibrate any cassette to a real-time index, simply press the GO button on the control panel. The most important part of the system is the micro-computer. The micro-computer carries out all calculations and controls the minute and second readings on the display. The computer program contains 3 tables, one for tape thickness compiled on the basis of practical experience. (Large number of cassettes on the market have been carefully measured at the Bang & Olufsen laboratory to ensure accurate time indication). If that's not enough, the Beocord 9000 is furnished with a specially recorded test tape which permits you to verify the accuracy of the tape head's azimuth adjustment. The fabulous design belongs to Jakob Jensen. Technical data: Wow and flutter: 0.045% WRMS | Frequency range: 20-20,000 Hz +/-1.5dB (All Quality Types), Metal 10-25,000 Hz +/-3dB | Dimensions: 53x13x30cm | Weight: 7.8 kg

TEAC R-999X (1984) - The Super Analog Reverse Master

cassette deck

The R-999X introduced by TEAC in 1984 is a cassette deck format which achieves the convenience of auto reverse without compromising recording and playback quality. The challenge was in finding a way to maintain close-to-identical recording and playback performance in both directions, for both sides of the tape. After exhaustive research and development the unique Acculign Rotating Head System was developped, a system as different from ordinary rotating types as night is from day. Using Teac's own Cobalt Amorphous (CA) Rec/Play heads along with source/tape monitoring in the three-head configuration on a diecast base, the rotating head assembly with ceramic stoppers is mounted on an exteremely precise dual micro-bearing. This high-precision system maintains almost perfectly identical performance in either tape direction.

In the interest of the best possible mechanical performance the R-999X features a 6-motor mechanism in a Bi-Directional Symmetrical Transport. This auto-reverse model uses two FG servo-controlled brushless DC direct-drive (DD) capstan motors with heavy flywheel for unfailing speed accuracy in either direction. It also uses two tension servo-controlled corelss DC direct-drive (DD) motors for reel tension servo control, and two motors for support functions. TEAC's Manual Calibration System offers considerable level and bias adjustment flexibility, a real advantage to those seeking optimum recording quality. The R-999X is provided with independent controls and a test-tone generator for exact adjustment of bias and level (sensitivity) for both left and right channels. A 4-bit microprocessor-operated CPS (Computomatic Program Search) system is responsible for various memory, search and repeat functions. The R-999X is equipped with double dbx and Dolby B/C noise reduction systems but it also features dbx disc decoding as well (for dbx encoded vinyl records). Technical data: Wow and flutter: 0.025% (WRMS) | Frequency response (-20 dB): 20-22,000/21,000/20,000 Hz (Metal/chrome/normal) | Dimensions: 432x119x350 mm | Weight: 8.5 kg.

Aurex PC-4280 (1977) - 3-Head To Go

cassette deck

The Aurex (a Toshiba brand name for Japan) PC-4280 was a compact, portable cassette recorder introduced in 1977. The biggest feature of the PC-4280 is the use of a 3-Head System, a rare feature for a portable deck. This system consists of 3 independent (discrete) heads mounted on a rigid zinc die-cast head block. There is a hyperbolic AS (all-sendust) 1 micron playback head, a ferrite 5 micron recording head and a double gap ferrite erase head which doubles as a tape tensioner. The mechanism is using a high-precision 38 pulse FG servo controlled belt drive mechanism with mechanical tape control. A built-in 6kHz oscillator can be used for record head Azimuth adjustment and a 400Hz oscillator can be used for recording sensitivity adjustment. Settings can be visualized on the VU meters. The deck can be powered within a voltage range of 7-16 V with the help of a built-in DC-DC converter. A clip-on battery box and external 100V AC adapter were also available. Accesories included a shoulder strap and a dust cover that allowed activating the pause function with the lid closed. This portable recorder can be further expanded with the use of the MX-2480 6 channel mixer (microphones and line), the SS-4280W active 10W loudspeaker system or the MA-15 external "adres" noise reduction unit. Technical data: Frequency response: 20-18.000 Hz chrome | Signal to noise: 60dB | Wow and flutter: 0.07% (RMS) | Dimensions: 300x135x85 mm | Weight:  3.4 kg (without batteries)

Technics RS-B100 (1983) - The Science of Sound

cassette deck

The RS-B100 cassette recorder from 1983 is a deck that brings together every feature even the most demanding audiophile could desire. The Quartz DD Closed-Loop Double Capstan is an advanced tape transport system designed to maximize speed accuracy and protect tape from outside influences when it is in contact with the heads. There are two capstans, one on either side of the head block. The take-up capstan is an extension of the Technics planar opposed direct drive motor spindle. Employed for the first time in the RS-B100, the innovative Phase Compensation circuitry rectifies high range phase linearity. So you enjoy a dramatic improvement in sound quality. Playback amplifier performance is supplemented by direct coupled construction using dual FETs. Since there are  no coupling capacitors in the signal path, you obtain the full benefits of Phase Compensation circuitry. The RS-B100 has all three of the world's finest noise reduction systems. Equally important, they are all in double circuits so you can enjoy 3-head real-time monitoring with correct NR decoding. dbx provides up to 110dB dynamic range while virtually eliminating noise. An added benefit is the built-in dbx disc decoder for playback of dbx encoded records (vinyl). Dolby C and B noise reduction assure complete compatibility with other decks and prerecorded cassettes. The MPX filter can be switched on to avoid NR mistracking when recording FM broadcasts.

The RS-B100 features AX (amorphous) combination 3-head system. The noble metal ruthenium (Ru), combined with carefully balanced admixtures, provides higher saturation flux density in the recording head and grater permeability in the playback head. Of course, the wider 2.5 micron recording gap width also contributes to higher MOL while the narrower 0.8 micron playback head gap extends high frequency response. The Technics combination head avoids azimuth adjustment problems since the recording and plyback head gap angles are precisely aligned in a computer controlled manufacturing process. Besides the DD capstan motor, the RS-B100 uses a second, high torque, DC motor for reel drive and one additional motor to move the head block. The RS-B100's advanced metering system uses 18 fluorescent display segments to show the signal level from -40dB to +18dB. This wide range more accurately reflects the higher recording levels possible with dbx. The RS-B100 lets you take advantage of the strong points of particular tapes for specific applications. Left and right channel recording calibration is independent and bias can be adjusted for normal and chrome tapes. As shown in the photo, the meters automatically switch to 1dB-step indication when the test signal (400Hz/12.5kHz) oscillators are used. The 3-way Digital Tape Counter can be switched to show remaining tape time, elapsed rec mute time and a highly accurate 3-digit tape counter. Other features include: music search, output level control, timer capability, black and silver input level knobs included and optional remote control (RP-9645) available. Technical data: Frequency response: Metal 15-25000Hz (20-23000Hz +/-3db), Chrome 15-23000Hz (20-21000Hz +/-3dB), Normal 15-21000Hz (20-19000Hz +/-3dB) | Dynamic range 110dB with dbx | Dimensions: 430x98x273 mm | Weight 5.6kg

ASC AS 3001 (1982) - Made in Germany.

cassette deck

The AS3001 was one of the most sophisticated cassette deck ever. It was Made in Germany and it was introduced in 1982 as the successor of the AS3000. They are basically the same recorder with the AS3001 replacing the High-Com noise reduction found on the AS3000 with the more common Dolby B and C noise reduction. ASC (Audio System Componenten) was originally founded in 1964 and it was specializing in language training systems based on tape recorders from Braun. When Braun seized production of tape recorders ASC started the development of their own tape recorder models. One can clearly see the stylistic and technical similarities with Braun in their early products. The AS3001 features a 3-Direct Drive motor PAPST mechanism mounted in a die-cast base for highest stability. It is built as a dual-capstan transport with 3-head (Sendust) configuration. For best results with any tape type the AS3001 features fine BIAS/Level adjustment for 6 different tape types (normal, 2xchrome, fecr, 2xmetal). This system is called RALF (Response Adjust Level Frequency). The AS3001 also features a digital tape counter with various memory functions, pitch control, fluorescent level meter, microphone input with built-in mixing possibility and headphone output with level control. Nakamichi 1000 Tri-Tracer (1973) - World's First 3-head deck.

cassette deck

According to the Nakamichi literature, the 1000 Tri-Tracer introduced in 1973 was the World First 3-head cassette deck. On the other hand the SONY TC-177SD was also the World First 3-head cassette deck, so it's up to you to decide which was "The First"... One thing is for sure, the 1000 Tri-Tracer was a technological tour de force. Tri-Tracer is the designation employed by Nakamichi Research Inc. to describe a new generation of cassette recorders. Three completely separate heads - erase, record, playback - afford off-the-tape monitoring, but more importantly, extend flat frequency response to beyond 20,000 Hz. The record head is of Hi-Mu ferrite with five micron gap to insure optimum tape saturation. The playback head has a special Hi-Mu hard permalloy core with titanium film laminations permitting a gap width of only 0.7 microns, thus extending high frequency response. Also, proper head azimuth alignment is crucial to extend high frequency response. Nakamichi provides a foolproof means for achieving precise alignment everytime. Two small LED's on the panel flash alternately when the head alignment is properly set. A 400 Hz test tone oscillator is incorporated as an aid in adjusting the azimuth of the recording head and as a reference tone for adjusting the record/playback level of different tape formulations.

Tape is driven through a closed-loop, dual capstan system by a pulse-controlled D.C. servo motor which maintains consstant speed over a wide range of line voltage and frequency variations. Two large staggered flywheels smooth out any residual speed irregularities and insure extremely low wow and flutter. In addition to the standard mic inputs, a third blend mic input is provided. Each input has its own level control thus permitting professional quality mixing. The blend mic is particularly helpful in highlighting solo instruments and voices. Technical data: Wow and Flutter less than 0.1% (DIN 45507 Weighted Peak) | Frequency response: 35-20,000 Hz (+/-3 dB Chrome) | Dimensions 515x305x240 mm | Weight 17,7 kg. Optional accesory: RM10 wired remote control, flightcase. Original sale price: 2798 DM, 1100 USD.
