In March 1979, at the very first European hi-fi exhibition of the year in Paris, Akai introduced a bold concept: the N35 series mini hi-fi system. Designed as a compact yet high-performance setup, the N35 combined modern technology with sleek styling, aiming to deliver serious sound in a smaller format.
A Four-Component System
The Akai N35 was presented as a complete system built from four separate components:
-
GC-N35 Cassette Deck – a front drawer-loading deck, compatible with LN, LH, Chrome, and FeCr tapes.
-
AT-N35 Digital Tuner – offering precise tuning and a modern look for its time.
-
PA-N35 Preamplifier – the control center of the system.
-
PM-N35 Power Amplifier – providing the muscle to drive speakers with clarity and punch.
Ahead of Its Time
Although the N35 series never went into full production, it played a vital role in Akai’s product development. Its design concepts and compact modular approach directly influenced later models, most notably the Akai UC series mini hi-fi systems.
Legacy
Today, the Akai N35 stands as a fascinating chapter in vintage audio history—a glimpse into what could have been, and a reminder of Akai’s constant drive to innovate during the golden era of hi-fi.
