The TC-K88B is part of the "original" ESPRIT series components from Sony and it was introduced in 1979. This ESPRIT series was the basis for all the later produced ES series model. With a slim line construction of only 80mm high (a perfect match for the other components of the ESPRIT series) this model hides a series of sophisticated technological solutions. First there is a highly sophisticated 3-motor drive system. These are not just any kind of motors, they are 3 Independent Direct Drive motors, Sony's unique BSL (brush & slotless) motors. Each motor performs its specialized function with maximum efficiency while the capstan motor is Quartz Crystal controlled. While it's built only as a 2-head (Sendust&Ferrite head) configuration model it can handle all tape types: Normal, FeCr, Chrome, Metal, one of the early models to adopt Metal tape compatibility. Another highlight of this model is the 33 segment fast reacting LCD peak metering system developed by Kutaragi-san. At your command, tape remaining can be displayed simultaneously with musical peaks. In the absence of musical material, the tape remaining indication takes the form of one illuminated display segment on each meter. In the presence of musical material, it appears as a "blank" segment on each meter, and this indication remains active and accurate in fast forward and rewind. A digital tape counter and AMS (Automatic Music Sensor) adds more convenience to this highly advanced model. An exclusive Dolby IC noise reduction with switchable MPX filter is responsible for hiss free recording. There is actually a 4th motor responsible for the tray loading mechanism while the TC-K88B can also be remote controlled via the optional wired RM-50 full-function remote control.
