The Walkman (portable compact cassette player) was first created because Sony co-founder Masaru Ibuka wanted to be able to listen to music on long flights. The first model of Sony Walkman, the TPS-L2, was released on July 1, 1979. The original Walkman (portable compact cassette player) was created from aluminum, and the later models were made from plastic. Previously, portable cassette machines of various designs were available but they were handheld units and recorders (mostly mono). The TPS-L2 Walkman is the first compact cassette playback-only device specifically created for music listening on-the-go via lightweight headphones. It is worth mentioning that the initial name of this music player was Sound-about in the USA, Freestyle in Australia and Stowaway in the UK. Even though officially only Sony is using the Walkman name in most languages the use of Walkman became generic, meaning a personal stereo of any make.
