The HR-W1 was the World First High-Definition video recorder introduced by Victor (JVC) in Japan 1993. The key feature is the the W-VHS system, a High-Definition system called back then Hi-Vision (1035i). This new system was of course backwards compatible with VHS and S-VHS systems. Based on the VHS system invented by JVC this further development not only that featured High-Definition video on a tape based format but it also featured Hi-Fi Digital Audio recording while the W1 was also equipped with a satellite receiver for high-quality audio-video over satellite transmission.
